Only the ancient Sidhe elves are immune to the Riders' influence, which led to them being branded heretics. With most of their work done, the two elder Riders leave, leaving only D'Sparil, the youngest and weakest Rider, behind to oversee the oppression. He sends the armies of the Seven Kings against the Sidhe, who have no choice but to extinguish the Seven Candles, vanquishing the armies. The retribution is swift and hard, and most of the elves are destroyed. Now, one of the last remaining Sidhe must take the fight to D'Sparil himself, being the only hope his world has left.
It uses the engine from id Software's DOOM and transplants that game's first person shooter gameplay into a fantasy setting. Like DOOM, Heretic consists of three distinct episodes, playable in any order, the first being available as shareware.
Every episode consists of nine levels, one of them a hidden one. The goal in each level is to find the exit, killing everything standing in one's way. Keys must be found and buttons pressed to advance. Enemies include gargoyles, golems, undead knights, sorcerers, ophidian beasts and more. Most enemies exist in several varieties: some have additional range attacks, others have ghost forms and are impervious to certain weapons. The weapon arsenal is large and varied: the basic weapons are a wooden staff and the Elvenwand that shoots low-damage magic bullets.
More powerful equipment must be found: the Ethereal Crossbow dispenses a spread of arrows doing high damage, but at a low firing rate. The Dragon's Claw and Hellstaff shoot with a higher frequency: the Claw hits enemies instantly, the Staff's energy bullets need to travel to them first. The Phoenix Rod fires explosive charges and must be handled with care. The Firemace unleashes steel metal projectiles that bounce across the room towards the enemy. A better melee weapon than the wooden staff are the Gauntlets of the Necromancer, which dispense deadly energy.
Heretic goes beyond DOOM in certain aspects. The engine has been enhanced with the ability to look up and down and the ability to fly, and wind currents pushing the player in often unwanted directions have been added. Most impressive are his combat moves. When using his basic weapon, a long pike, he can perform a variety of special attacks, including a devastating spinning move that can decapitate almost any foe. He also has an array of magic spells and weapons, ranging from simple fireball spells to the deadly Phoenix Bow.
In addition to his offensive array, Corvus boasts several useful defensive spells. My favorite is the meteor shield -- when cast, it creates several shimmering green orbs which orbit you until you get close to an enemy, then the orbs lock on and track even the fastest foes.
Combining your offensive and defensive abilities is the key to success. One of the nicest features is the tutorial that will teach you the basic moves you will need to complete the game, from simple jumping, climbing and swimming to pole vaults and the special attacks of your pike. It's worth playing through for the chance to bash on the whacking chicken alone.
One drawback in the game is the inability to control the camera position. While the camera usually positions itself so that you have a mostly unobstructed view, there are times when it will inhibit some of your peripheral vision, making it difficult to detect enemies hiding to either side.
It was also hard to spot objects and clues in some areas -- there was no way to get the camera into a position where you could see clearly.
Adding the ability to switch temporarily to a first-person view to scan the area would have helped. The other main problem is that the game is too short. It didn't take very long to play through all the levels to the ending, and the final story wrap-up didn't really go anywhere. The game really needed to be about half again as long -- there wasn't much sense of having accomplished a great task when it was over.
One area not to miss is cooperative multiplayer. We had more fun playing the game with two going through than playing alone. Most 3D games have focused on deathmatch play which is also in Heretic II -- it was nice to see some extra attention paid to making cooperative play just as fun. Although Heretic II is based on the same engine as Quake II , there have been so many improvements added that the underlying engine is almost unrecognizable. Can you re post it?

Using win7 pro 64 bit, Intel i7. I only installed the non enhanced version, but ran the 3DFX driver from it and got it to work quite well. The only problem is running a saved game after you quit the game. It will run the saved game if I stay in the game.
However, if you have the "Entering" a level that it saves, will run, after I do that I then run my old saved game. I cannot get the enhanced version to run at all, it exits right away. Here's some detailed instructions if you're having trouble. Download the main file and fix file to the desktop. Get the manual file too good lore in there. These are zip files. They might just unzip when you click on them. If they don't get a unzip program like WINRar.
Unzip them to the desktop. In the main file, drill down and you'll see two files, a large mdf file and a small mds file. You need to mount the small mds file. I use Daemon Tools Lite. That file is now mounted as a drive in My Computer.
Click on that and the game will install. After installation and before you play the game, install the fix. This comes from the other zip file. It's a single file called quake2. Extract the file and place it in the directory in which you installed the game on your C drive or wherever.

After installing Heretic 2 unpack the folder containing the fix for playing on Windows inside the instalation directory of Heretic 2.
