Prepare the interior: Remove trim and moldings from the working area. Cover furniture and flooring in the area.
Locate the studs: Using a stud finder or other manual method, locate the nearest studs within and around the desired opening. Cutaway the drywall: Using a circular saw, carefully cut away the drywall floor to ceiling inside the studs and gently pry it off the wall. Mark it on the wall. Cut the exterior siding : Using a circular saw, cut away the exterior siding within the marked perimeter. Cut the sheathing: Measure the window inset and cut a hole through the sheathing that much smaller than the exterior hole.
This will leave an opening just big enough for the window. Back inside, saw through any studs that cross the window opening and remove.
Be mindful of electrical wiring in in-wall plumbing. Using advanced framing techniques, install the window framing source. These will protect building materials from exterior water penetration, which will reduce the risk of rot, mold, mildew, and bug damage.
They also can reduce air leakage source. Install the window from the exterior. Multiple people are needed to safely perform this step. Nail the flange to the frame only at the corners for now source. Measure window for plumb, level, and square. Inside, reinsulate the cavities exposed around the window. Fill any possible air leaks with caulking or expanding foam. Cut and install new drywall around the window opening , completing the proper steps for taping, mudding, and finishing.
Measure between the two jack studs and cut two pieces of 2x4 to this length for the rough sill. Nail the two together and place them between the jacks, butted against the bottom cripples.
Fasten them in place using toenailing at the sides and up from the bottom cripples. With all the new framing pieces in place drill a hole at each corner, through the siding to the outside. Working from the outside, use a jigsaw to cut out the siding. Measure from each hole and mark the siding at the width of your jig saw baseplate.
This is the measurement from the blade to the outer edge of the baseplate. Set a long level on the marks and draw a line for all four sides of the frame. Fasten a straight, 1x3 board to the siding along these lines and use it as a fence to guide the saw blade. Watch where you drive fasteners so they will be covered by the trim molding when your done. Starting on one side with a new, sharp blade, cut along the lines using the holes as a starting point. Keep the baseplate pressed firmly against the fence and siding while cutting for a clean, accurate cut.
Move the wooden fence to cut the other side, top, and bottom of the frame opening and remove the siding. Install the new window jamb as described here. Cut the Old Wall Studs To build a new window frame in an existing wall, first remove the interior wall covering and any insulation to expose the studs. Install the Framing Work out the header size for the opening you're making and subtract the width from the total you used to cut the top cripples above. Lay it in the intended vertical position.
Measure downward from there to arrive at the length of the jack studs. Cut two two-by-fours to that length. Nail the jack studs into the king studs, ensuring that the jack studs touch the top of the sole or bottom plate. Cut four of the two-by-fours as the bottom vertical supports. These boards should be three inches shorter than the height of the window sill plate. Nail two against the jack studs, then nail two more in the center section. Measure the distance between the two jack studs. Use that dimension to cut two two-by-fours.
Nail them together as a double window sill plate. Nail on top of the four bottom vertical supports. Nail the window header on top of the two jack studs. Measure the distance between the top of the window header and the bottom of the top sill plate. Cut three pieces of two-by-four to that length.
Toenail these pieces vertically in that section. Actively scan device characteristics for identification. Use precise geolocation data. Select personalised content. Create a personalised content profile.
